I've been watching the The Walking Dead since the beginning and last Monday's episode was comfortably the most harrowing in the shows 7 season long run.
The last episode of TWD was also the most harrowing for the group who have run into psychopath after psychopath and have managed to survive by besting them in cruelty but Monday's episode left us no doubt that the group has met their match in Negan.
It's been a long time since I read the comics but I remember the same feeling that the group have met their match when Negan was introduced in the comics unleashing lucille on the head of Gleen in gruesome fashion. What transpired after that is likely to take place for the rest of the season and if Robert Kirkman and Scott M. Gimple get it right, season 7 could be the best season of The Walking Dead by a country mile.
There are a number of questions brought up by the devastating events of last Monday but by far the most prominent is where does the group go from here? Negan not only beat Glenn and Abraham to death but he utterly shattered the group's sense of self. A notable strain in the storyline last season was the group's arrogance about their ability to survive which lead to their fateful mistake to underestimate Negan. If it wasn't clear before, that sense of over-confidence is gone as Negan systematically broke Rick's will infront of the whole group.
What was most interesting after the Negan onslaught was it's aftermath as we see the group broken, rudderless, and without a clear plan for retribution. This is all set to be a point of conflict within the group as they'll be forced to follow Negan's orders with him unable to resist rubbing it in their face. It would be up to Rick to pick up the pieces but with events of last Monday, it's going to be an uphill task to say the least. Maggie was the only person in the group vying to kill Negan as he took what's left of her decimated family which suggest she may take on more responsibility as Rick and rest of the group recover from the fallout of last episode.
In sum, the next few weeks are going to be very interesting as the group recuperate from last night events and answer whether they can move forward after brutally realizing they're not in control.
